Originally from Washington, D.C., now a longtime transplant to the greater Austin, Texas, area, former science teacher, extensive traveler, and lifelong amateur astronomer, has been delivering live educational entertainment to retirement centers and nursing homes for over 30 years. Mike also brings his shows to an engaging remote online format (Zoom, GoToMeeting, etc.) that simulates intellectual activity, thinking and life memories while providing relaxing entertainment to residents and fellow citizens.
Michael G. Albrecht earned a B.A. in History, with a Geology minor, at Sul Ross State University in the Big Bend region of West Texas. He holds a M.A. in Communication from the University of Texas at Austin. As a student at UT, Mr. Albrecht conducted astronomical research, matching electronic stellar data sources with objects captured on photographic glass plates generated at McDonald Observatory by UT Austin astronomy faculty. He assisted with spectroscopic analysis of sunlight during a total solar eclipse. While at UT, he was honored to interview Dr. John Archibald Wheeler, Director of the UT Institute for Theoretical Physics, who coined the term “black hole.” With 40 years of observational field astronomy under the night sky, as well as extensive and frequent review of astronomical topics, Mr. Albrecht possesses a wide knowledge base and keen understanding of modern astronomical theory and practice. Mr. Albrecht was founder and host of the Austin Access local television series The Astronomy Network, which probed topics on astronomy, gravity, and star formation. During the passage of Halley’s Comet, Mr. Albrecht led star parties to remote regions of Texas to observe the celestial event. Mr. Albrecht created the Tour of the Universe slide presentation series which continues to provide intellectual enrichment to senior retirement communities and public parks around the nation. Mr. Albrecht is a member of the Austin Astronomical Society and lives in the Texas Hill Country where he continues lunar, planetary and deep sky observations with his Celestron Nexstar 6 CE and Sky Watcher 8” reflector telescopes.
